An Overview of Recent Trends in Psychiatric Research in Korea

Abstract
We attempted to review the trends of psychiatric research in Korea by examining articles presented in the "Neuropsychiatry", official journal of the Korean Neuropsychiatric Association, for the years from 1978 to 1983. They were classified into 3 categories, i.e.: biological, psychological, and sociological ones. Further categorization was made along with lines of etiology, mechanism and treatment. The other lines of categorization made were overview, research, and clinical articles. They were also classified into 24 topic areas according to the system applied in the Yearbook of Psychiatry and Mental health, 1976 edition.
The results were as follows:
1. The total number of articles reviewed were 378. Annual increase in the number of articles was noted.
2. As to the topic areas, articles on clinical psychiatry was the most frequent ones. The articles on psychology and psychophysiology, on biochemistry and pharmacology, and on. social psychiatry were the next frequent ones in this order.
3. The percentage of articles presented from 1978 to 1983 on neurophysiology, on biochemistry and pharmacology, on genetics, on child psychiatry, on alcoholism and on suicide were increased compared with those from 1962 to 1977. The percentage of articles for this study period on neurology and on social psychiatry were decreased compared with those of the years, from 1962 to 1977.
4. Articles on mechanism were 57.6%0. The percentage of articles for this study period on treatment were decreased compared with those of the years from 1962 to 1977.
5. Articles on psychological areas were 48.4%. The percentage of articles on social areas for this study period were decreased compared with those of the years from 1962 to 1977.
6. Research articles were 44.1% of all and clinical ones were 44. 7%. The percentage of research articles appeared for this study period were increased and overview articles were decreased compared with those of the years from 1962 to 1977.
